Who would have dreamed things would end up here? When Donald Trump formally launched his presidential campaign on June 16, 2015 most people (myself included) thought it was a joke! Why on earth would the CEO from the reality show “The Apprentice” want to run for president? I mean, we had all heard about his “birther” attack on President Obama and his crazy demands to see proof that the man that Americans voted for to lead this country was an American himself, but this was taking things WAAAAaaaay too far! As one month passed, then two, then three…I told myself and others that he would eventually fade away or get bored and resign. Apparently the Republican Party thought the same thing because Trump’s entertaining gestures and insults on anyone who disagreed with him went unchecked. Then the primaries started and people actually started voting for him! Not just a few people but a LOT of them! Now several months later, here we are…Donald Trump is on his way to winning the Republican nomination for President of the United States.
Debate after debate, Donald Trump never spoke about policy…just about how he was going to “make America great again” and “take it back”! I did not know that America WASN’T great and Trump has never really identified just who he is taking America back from? I mean, who exactly has it? Every time Trump speaks about “making America great again” he says it with such vitriol that you can’t help but get angry at the persons responsible for this thievery. How dare they take America from us! Wait a minute…so just exactly who are the owners of this not-so-great country? Mr. Trump would you please identify who the perpetrators are? To whom should we direct all of this anger and frustration?
One thing is certain and as Trump himself has confirmed, his supporters are angry! They want to make America great again and they want to get it back! They believe that finally, their knight has come along to rescue them and give them back what is rightfully theirs! Again, it is unclear exactly who has America now. Is it the illegal immigrants that Trump has spoken so harshly about? Those “drug dealers, rapists, and murderers”? Or is it those “thugs” that are protesting at his rallies? I guess if one were to infer who the culprits are based on Trump’s speeches, it must be illegal immigrants and well…all minorities (both American citizens and non-citizens). It can’t be the poorly educated because he LOVES them…but wait, what if I am a poorly educated illegal immigrant, does he love me too? OH, to be loved by Donald Trump. My life would finally be complete! #JustKidding
Anger has no logic. Trump is quoted as saying “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters,” and sadly, he is correct.
His supporters are so blind with fury that it does not matter if he lies every 5 minutes. For Trump’s supporters, it does not matter if he singles out an entire religion (Islam) and claims that they hate America. To be clear, Islamic extremists are very dangerous and do pose a threat…but they are EXTREMISTS. Of course, for the Trump supporter that means anyone that looks like they could be from Iraq, Iran, even India (basically anyone that is brown) should be hated too. After all, they started it by hating us first!
Anger has no logic. Think about the last time you were REALLY angry at someone. Did you stop to rationalize why you were angry or what you were angry about? Did it matter whether the words you were saying made sense? Did it matter whether the person with whom you were angry was making sense? More than likely, it did not. So it is with the Trump supporter.
