Well folks, it is finally over. America has elected a new President and it is Donald Trump. The general election played out just like the primaries. Trump won more states than anyone projected and all the while he and his supporters kept screaming that the system was rigged. It always seemed odd that the rigged system that Trump was talking about kept treating him so well and if it was rigged, it definitely was not against him. So…now it’s time to buckle down and prepare for a Trump Administration. Below are a few of the things that Trump has promised to do in his first 100 days. Our job is to just watch and see how all of this turns out.
Propose Constitutional Amendment to Impose Term Limits on Congress
Since only Congress can propose and pass legislation (See Article 1, Section 1 of the Constitution), it will be interesting to see which Congress member drafts and proposes this initiative.
Reduce Federal Workforce by Implementing a Hiring Freeze
Trump promises to put a hiring freeze on federal jobs except military, public safety, and public health. So…if you are interested in working for the federal government, hopefully you will get hired before Trump is sworn in, otherwise…you are S.O.L!
Will Label China a Currency Manipulator
Trump says he will direct his Secretary of Treasury to label China a currency manipulator. Okay, well whatever that is, it doesn’t sound very diplomatic. Calling any country a “manipulator” can’t be good.
Cancel Every Unconstitutional Executive Action, Memo, and Order by President Obama
I am sure he wishes he could just cancel President Obama.
Remove 2 Million Criminal Illegal Immigrants and Cancel Visas
Of course no one wants criminal illegal immigrants running loose. The cancellation of visas to foreign countries that won’t take them back might cause many to be scared.
The Return of the Manufacturing Jobs
Trump promises to bring jobs back although he never said how or where, exactly, he is bringing them back from. It also not known what type of manufacturing jobs we can expect to be brought back. So I guess we are just going to have just wait and see. I do feel some sympathy for those people living in the rust belt who genuinely believe that manufacturers are going to throw out the technology they bought to replace people in the first place and put people back to work.
Repeal ObamaCare
Trump promises to repeal ObamaCare and replace it with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Well, only those who are employed have access to HSAs which means that you can use designate an amount of money to be taken out of your paycheck before taxes and put into the account. Chances are though, if you are employed you are insured through your employer. Unemployed folks may have the Medicaid option which will increase state expenditures but under-employed Americans are S.O.L and will have to resume using the emergency room for health care.
Affordable Childcare and ElderCare Act
Trump promises to allow Americans to deduct childcare and eldercare from their taxes and create a tax-free Dependent Care Savings Account. This is great if you have a well-paying job with the luxury of being able to make your paycheck even shorter; however, if you are already living paycheck to paycheck like most Americans, then a savings account of any kind is not all that helpful. The matching contribution from employers is nice, but again…if you are underemployed then you are S.O.L.
There are a few more things in the plan that are worth discussing, but in an effort to keep things short, only a few were highlighted today. The Political Great Whine will continue to monitor and comment on the Trump Administration as it develops.
Thanks for “listening” to me whine. Hopefully my whining has made you think. If so, tell your friends/family/colleagues that you heard it through the Political Great Whine!
